Vol. IV, Issue No. 9
September 2009
|
| Dear Friend of Virginia
Wine:
September already! Seems like just yesterday
we were looking forward to warm summer days, and already
we're on the cusp of autumn. But what better time
to get out and enjoy Virginia landscapes and taste some
wines along the way. Of course, these are wine
stomping days and there's an opportunity around every
corner to do "the Lucy thing."
This month is choc
full of festivals and winery events from one end of the
state to another, with many listed in our
newsletter. The Virginia winery featured this
month is Spring Creek Wine Cellar in Pamplin. An
authentic farm winery, the tasting room is open from 1
pm to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. In our Bed
& Breakfast spotlight is the Inn at Hope Springs
Farm, a "little bit of heaven" in Floyd County.
We'll be travelling to many of the festivals this
month and hope to see you along the way. You won't
want to miss the Rockbridge Wine Festival at Lime
Kiln in Lexington on September 12 and The Virginia
Wine Festival in Centreville on September 19 and
20. It's a great opportunity to taste the best of
the commonwealth...over 350 wines from some 50 wineries.
Cheers!

WINES SIPPED, SWIRLED AND SCORED IN WINE
CLASSIC COMPETITION
By Virginia Wine Lover
Staff
|
|
|
More than 130 vintages were entered in this year's
Virginia Wine Lover magazine's Wine Classic
held on June 22 at the Riverstone Chop House in Suffolk,
Virginia. The competition was open to all Virginia
wine makers and saw entries from nearly two dozen of the
state's wineries and vineyards that included more than
one hundred varietals and encompassed virtually every
grape grown in the commonwealth.
The invited panel of judges was comprised of
authoritative members of the food and wine community,
who are ardent supporters of the state's burgeoning
industry. They evaluated each entrant on its
relative merits as it pertained to its specified
category by using a double blind tasting process and
utilizing a modified version of the Davis 20-Point
system.

SPRING CREEK WINE CELLAR
By Evelyn
McCluney
|
|
|
An authentic Virginia farm winery, Spring Creek
Wine Cellar is located in Virginia's heartland, south of
the village of Pamplin. Located on the edge of three
counties, the area is surrounded by national historic
landmarks and outdoor recreation sites.
The integrated winery and vineyard was founded on a
firm belief that the true personality of the grape is
accentuated in its purest form as a single varietal
wine. To capture and preserve the true character
of the grape variety requires both a minimum
intervention philosophy and the use of stainless
steel. Only the grape varieties grown in their own
Canongate Meadow Vineyard are used, assuring that
the regional flavors and aromas are captured in the
wines. Fourteen, distinctive,
affordable wines are produced, from crisp, clear, white
wines to full-bodied, ruby-violet red
wines.
To preserve the rural landscape, the winery is
housed in the basement of the southern colonial home. An
intimate tasting room welcomes visitors. A gazebo,
overlooking gently rolling meadows, invites you to relax
and enjoy a glass of wine, or you can bring a picnic to
enjoy in the shade of the many trees. The tasting
room is open from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday. For directions, visit www.springcreekwinecellar.com or call
(434)248-6981.

INN AT HOPE SPRINGS FARM
By Dan
Ingraham
|
|
|
In the heart of southwest Virginia's wine country,
nestled on 100 gorgeous acres is a little bit of heaven
called Inn at Hope Springs Farm. On Indian Ridge
in Floyd County below the grandeur of Buffalo Mountain,
this alpaca farm and B&B invites guests seeking an
experience reminiscent of landed gentry of the past
where grace is more valued than deadlines.
Surrounded by luxury with bold elegantly appointed
rooms, art and antiquities in the Louisiana Plantation
style Hope Manor, guests may wander the property with
its ponds, historic structures, and beautiful woodlands
filled with wildlife; or venture to many large and small
wineries, i.e. Chateau Morrisette, Villa Appalaccia,
Amrhein, Valhalla, Foggy Ridge Hard Apple Cider, and
Black Snake Mead within a short distance.

Easily accessible on Route 22l from I-77, I-81, and
the Blue Ridge Parkway, travelers from Virginia,
Washington, DC, North Carolina, and West Virginia will
arrive at this destination within a morning or
afternoon's drive. Being close to VA Tech and
Radford Universities, parents of students, and alums can
enjoy turning a 2 day game or concert weekend into a 3
or 4 day mini-vacation by including winery tours or
participating in the great outdoor recreational
activities of the Blue Ridge and New River Valley.
And for the music lover, combine wine tours with the
foot tapping beats of the Crooked Road Blue Grass sounds
at local jam sessions; or enjoy all day affairs, i.e.,
the Black Dog concerts at Chateau Morrisette, and the
ever popular annual FloydFest the end of July.
There is much to do and see in southwest
Virginia. Inn at Hope Springs Farm makes it easy
with packages already available online. Visit our
website, then come and sip wine on one of our glorious
balconies and watch the world go by. . . .
