Vol. III, Issue No. 9

September 2008

Dear Friend of Virginia Wine:

In the September newsletter, our lead article is about the strong showing of Virginia wines in the recent Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition.  Wines from the Old Dominion just keep getting better, and we are increasingly recognized as one of the leading wine regions in the country.

September presents a great opportunity to taste those Virginia wines, as there are festivals and winery events from one end of the state to the other.  Of particular note is the 33rd Annual Virginia Wine Festival in Manassas on September 27 and 28, where over 50 wineries will be participating.

Be sure to check out more event listings in the new, hot off the press issue of Virginia Wine Lover magazine, with Redskins quarterback Todd Collins on the cover.  According to Editor Patrick Evans-Hylton, Collins is a Virginia wine lover who "can quaff with the best oenophile."  The magazine is out on newsstands now.

Cheers!

VIRGINIA WINES RECOGNIZED AT FOURTH ATLANTIC SEABOARD WINE COMPETITION

By Gordon Murchie, President, Vinifera Wine Growers Association

 Vinifera Wine Growers Association

Virginia is now being regionally recognized for its quality wine production. Since the First Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition in 2005, the wineries of the Old Dominion have represented the majority of competition entries and have been awarded the lion's share of medals.

In this year's Fourth Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition, again Virginia wineries had a strong showing.  Fox Meadow Winery won the Best of Show Jefferson Wine Trophy, competing with 450 other wines from 102 wineries in 13 East Coast states.  Out of 30 Best of Category winners, Virginia took 17 awards, as well as 36 out of 56 gold medals, and 68 out of 120 silver medals awarded.  Among the highest medal and award winning Virginia wineries were again Fox Meadow with four gold and Best of Category for Bordeaux-style Red Blends, Lake Anna Winery with the highest number of medals, nine in all, including Best of Category for White Interspecific Blends, Barboursville Vineyards with seven medals, including two gold and two Best of Category for Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio and Vinifera Blush/Rosé Wines, Rockbridge Vineyards andRappahannock Cellars both won eight medals each and Horton with five medals which included four gold and Best of Category for Other White Vinifera Varietals.

The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition is one of the few, if only, wine competitions that focuses on the wines being produced on the Atlantic Seaboard that encompasses 17 states and is dedicated to promoting national consumer awareness that the East Coast of the United States is a quality wine producing region equal to the West Coast.  It is also unique in that it conducts a variety of public wine tasting events that ensure that all wine entries in the ASWC, award winners or not, will be featured and made available to an array of interested, public wine consumers and organizations.

The event was held July 19-20 at the elegant clubhouse of the Regency at Dominion Valley in Haymarket, Virginia and is sponsored by the Vinifera Wine Growers Association.

FIRST DOWN WITH VIRGINIA WINE

By Kimberly Eakin, Wine Gourmet

Tailgating

To avoid unnecessary roughness at your next tailgate, add these Virginia wines to the line-up.

Opening Kick-Off
There is nothing better than a succulent, refreshing wine that leaves your mouth hungering for more.   Try Jefferson Chardonnay Reserve or Blue Ridge Solstice.

Offsides
These wines are a little off-beat and will keep the conversation flowing-Horton Norton, AmRhein Petite Verdot, and Villa Appalachia Toscanello.

The Long Fruit Bomb
Come on, we all love fruity wines with our juicy hamburgers.  Pair it with Blue Ridge Sweet Shiloh, Rockbridge Lexington & Concord, or White Hall Petite Manseng.

Victory Dance
After the running back does his chicken dance, pop the cork on the incomparable Thibaut-Janisson Blanc de Chardonnay Brut NV.

Tailgater's Wine Guide
1. Offer a choice of red and white wine.  Yes, some people like white wine with steak!
2. Use colorful acrylic wine glasses or tumblers.
3. One standard (750 ml) bottle of wine yields six 4 oz. glasses.

With a full case as your defensive line, you'll field 72 pours.  Touchdown!
4. Like any good coach, have a back-up corkscrew for your second string.
