Dear Friend:

To mark the 20th Anniversary of Virginia Wine Month, Virginia Wine Lover joins with Virginia Tourism in inviting travelers to "Find the One You Love" this October among the more than 130 wineries and over 60 special wine related events and festivals taking place throughout the state.  It's the perfect time of year to celebrate the wine harvest and admire the 15 million acres of fall foliage, both of which are at their peak in October.

VIRGINIA WINE INDUSTRY KICKS OFF WINE MONTH
By Annette Ringwood Boyd, Executive Director, Virginia Wine Board

Guests Taste Virginia Wines
(Guests taste wines from Linden, Pollak, Doukenie Winery, Ingleside, Barboursville and Keswick. Photo courtesy of Joe Mahoney of the Richmond Times Dispatch.)

The Virginia Wine Industry kicked off the beginning of October Virginia Wine Month at the Capitol in Richmond, Virginia on September 29, 2008. Around 200 people were in attendance to help celebrate including restaurateurs, wine shop owners, wine distributors as well as winery folks and state dignitaries.

Governor Kaine officially proclaimed October as Virginia Wine Month during the evening.  In addition, former Governor Baliles who started the tradition in 1988 was a featured guest and noted the dramatic changes within the wine industry over the last twenty years.

Rock Stephens, Vice-Chairman of the Virginia Wine Board started the evening as well as Luca Paschina of Barboursville vineyards and Jenni McCloud of Chrysalis Vineyards, also members of the Virginia Wine Board. Jenni finished the formal comments of the evening with a toast to the continued success of the next twenty years of Virginia wine industry.

October Virginia Wine Month was established by Governor Gerald L. Baliles in 1988 as a way to support the state's young wine business - just 40 wineries at the time - and promote wine travel in Virginia. Twenty years later, the number of wineries has more than tripled and Virginia's reputation for wine-making continues to grow. In 2007, Virginia was named one of the top five up-and-coming wine regions in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine.

"The 20th anniversary of October Virginia Wine Month is a celebration of the tremendous growth of the Virginia wine industry," said David King, chairman of the Virginia Wine Board and co-owner of King Family Vineyards. "October Virginia Wine Month is an ideal time to visit Virginia and taste our world-class wines." The state's wineries, which span from the Eastern Shore to the Heart of Appalachia, are exciting destinations for wine lovers and travel enthusiasts.

More than 50 special wine-related events, from festivals to dinners and musical tributes, are planned throughout Virginia in October. The Virginia Tourism Corporation lists these events, as well as travel packages being offered for October Virginia Wine Month by Virginia hotels, inns and Bed & Breakfasts on their web site at www.virginia.org/wine.

The Virginia Wine Marketing Office was created by the Virginia Wine Board in 2007 to assist wineries, retailers, restaurateurs, tourism entities and others with the marketing and promotion of Virginia wines.  The office also serves to build the Virginia wine industry's stature among growing wine regions around the world.  For more information, please contact The Virginia Wine Board Marketing Office at 804.344.8200 or visit www.virginiawine.org.

KLUGE ESTATE FARM SHOP: WINE & CHEESE PAIRING
By Kristen Moses-Murray

Kluge Estate Farm Shop

Kluge New World Red
Ever heard of "days of wine and roses?"  Fall at the Kluge Estate Farm Shop is more about days of wine and cheese!  This month, visit the Farm Shop to sample Kluge Estate's New World Red 2004, a round and silky Bordeaux-style blend that exhibits well-balanced fruit.  One of the great things about this wine is that it pairs very well with cheeses.  The Farm Shop, in addition to being Kluge Estate's wine tasting room and sales center, also offers a glorious selection of artisanal cheeses.  We suggest trying New World Red with Idiazabel, a semi-firm Spanish sheep's milk cheese.  During production the cheese wheel is lightly smoked, imparting a slightly smoky quality that adds wonderfully to the rich nutty flavor.  New World Red and Idiazabel come together for a rich, flavor explosion!

This month, we suggest wine and cheese lovers alike embark on trying different pairings to come up with their own favorite matches.  The Farm Shop staff is on hand to help with the fun and delicious task.  With nine wines and dozens of cheeses from around the world, there is plenty of fun to be had.

VINO CURIOSO
AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL MATTHEWS
By Dezel Quillen

 Vino Curioso Logo
I recently sat down with Michael Matthews of Vino Curioso, a new and exciting winery that I have seen at a number of Virginia tasting events over the past year. For those who have been curious, like myself, about Vino Curioso, read on and enjoy this wonderful interview I had with him.

Dezel:
Was there one special bottle that initially got you into wine? If so, what was this serendipitous find?

Michael Matthews: There wasn't really one special bottle - more like a number of them. There are quality wines everywhere in the world and I have been fortunate enough to travel a good bit to experience wines from a great number of places. I lived in the UK for a number of years and was exposed to many of the great wines of Europe that you might not be able to experience here without spending a great deal of money. I also spent considerable time in Italy traveling for work and that brought exposure not only to Italian wines, but to wines from Eastern Europe that I am quite sure that you would never get to see here except for a couple of rare import wine shops.

Dezel: Tell us a little bit about Vino Curioso; I first saw you guys at a Virginia wine festival last year and there was a lot of buzz around your tent. The large question mark logo and catchy wine titles like Franc the Tank (Cabernet Franc) really played well to the crowd. What more is there to Vino Curioso? My readers, as well as myself, are curious to discover more about you guys.

Michael Matthews: Well, I met my winemaking partner on the golf course. We had been brought together by a mutual friend to play golf. It was the day that Hurricane Isabelle hit Northern Virginia about five years ago, hence, Isabelle's Revenge. The hurricane came blowing through and we were forced to leave the golf course. We ended up talking about wine making as Mike had been making wine for some time and I had just planted a vineyard. A few days later, we were in my basement stomping grapes with our feet creating what would be the first Vino Curioso. That's how it all started. Other than that, we're just a couple of normal guys who truly enjoy creating things. Making wine can be a tremendous challenge. Actually, it's downright difficult. We don't take anything for granted. We try to make something that we would like to drink ourselves and then we submit it to the masses to see if it wins approval. Believe me, not everything we have created has been submitted to the masses (smile). By the same token, when we do get it right, it feels pretty cool to have won a small battle with the forces of Mother Nature and chemistry. We both still have hectic full-time jobs and this "hobby on steroids" provides a great distraction from the everyday wear and tear of working for a living.

GRAY GHOST WINERY TAKES DOUBLE GOLD IN SAN FRANCISCO
Gray Ghost's 2007 Adieu took a Double Gold at The San Francisco International Wine Competition held earlier this summer.  It was only one of 127 wines to receive this honor out of 4,260 wines entered.  The San Francisco International Wine Competition is the largest, most influential international wine competition in America, judged by a prestigious panel of nationally recognized wine experts.

Gray Ghost was also awarded six medals, including gold on the Cabernet Sauvignon, in this year's Tasters Guild Consumers' Wine Judging held in Washington, D.C. in August.  The Tasters Guild Consumers' Wine Judging is a unique competition, since all wines are judged solely by consumers.

WILLIAMSBURG WINERY MARKS 20TH ANNIVERSARY
The 20th Anniversary of Williamsburg Winery coincides with the 20th Anniversary of Virginia Wine Month.  In the past 20 years, Williamsburg's "Governors White" has become one of the best-selling white wines in Virginia and has helped make the winery the largest in the Commonwealth.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Patrick Duffeler introduced Williamsburg Wines to the British trade and consumers on September 30 in London at the Association of Corporate Directors.  Williamsburg's Acte 12 of 1619 Chardonnay has just been listed for the second consecutive year as one of the "Best Wines in the World" by the highly respected Decanter Magazine of London.

Commenting on the greater recognition of the quality and price offered by Williamsburg Winery, Duffeler said "I am gratified to have seen the awards that resulted in orders for our wines coming from overseas.  It opens a new chapter in the history of our company."
