OCTOBER IS WINE MONTH IN VIRGINIA By Tamra
Talmadge-Anderson, Virginia Tourism
Corporation |
|
Virginia is a brilliant fall
destination, with more than 15 million acres of foliage
bursting into color, as well as 2,500 miles of
breath-taking scenic drives. And to top it all,
120 wineries are celebrating the harvest which is why
the Virginia Tourism Corporation designates October as
Virginia Wine Month. For families and friends
looking to make the most of fall, here is a taste of
what makes autumn the perfect time to visit
Virginia:
Wine Month
Celebrations Virginia Wine Month means
festivals, events and celebrations at wineries around
the state. Wine festivals abound, from the Town Point
Wine Festival along the Elizabeth River in Norfolk to
the Festival of The Grape in historic Powhatan to the
unforgettable Wine and Garlic Festival at Rebec
Vineyards in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Special
events like the Haunted Winery Dinner at DelFosse
Vineyards and Winery, All Things Olive at Villa
Appalachia Winery and Autumn Explosion and Barrel
Tasting at Barboursville Vineyards help make Virginia
Wine Month a great time to visit.
De-Vine Color
Tours Virginia was recently named
one of the top up-and-coming wine destinations in the
world and fall is the perfect time to come see why
everyone's talking about Virginia
wine. Brilliant fall colors highlight
the natural beauty surrounding the 120 wineries, and the
state's numerous wine trails make visiting wine country
easy and will add a little burgundy, white or rosé to
fall color tours. The wine trails combine unique
wine tasting rooms together with vibrant fall foliage,
scenic roadways, and quaint towns with locally-owned
restaurants and shops for a very special fall
experience.

| CHRYSALIS SWEEPS FIRST ANNUAL
NATIONAL NORTON
COMPETITION By Todd
Godbout, Wine Compass |
|
In 1998,
Chrysalis Vineyards' owner Jennifer McCloud planted
several acres of native Virginian Norton grape in the
new Locksley Estate vineyard with the intent to "restore
Virginia Norton to its rightful position of prominence
among fine wines." Her vision was realized when
Chrysalis swept the first Annual National Norton
Competition in St. Louis in August.
The most widely awarded
winery at the competition, Jennifer McCloud's Chrysalis
Vineyards in Middleburg, received five medals, two
Golds, two Silvers and one Bronze. Chrysalis 2004
Locksley Reserve and 2005 Barrel Select 100% Virginia
Norton were two of only six wines to win gold
medals. Their 2004 and 2005 Estate Bottled Norton
were two of 12 wines to receive silver medals. The
positive reception of Chrysalis' Norton was best
illustrated during the National Norton Wine Festival on
September 8, held in conjunction with the competition
medal ceremony. Throughout the day, visitors
crammed Chrysalis' two stations where Ms. McCloud
tutored the audience while pouring wine.
According to Ms. McCloud, "It was evident to me
that our Virginia Norton wines were a big hit at the
festival. Our table was swamped most of the day
with visitors five and six deep, and I lost count of how
many people asked us where they could purchase our
wines. We were proud to take two of the six Gold
medals from the associated competition, and Virginia is
once again soundly 'on the map' as the region producing
high quality wines from its own native grape, Norton,

THE MONTICELLO
WINE EXPERIENCE By Chad Zakaib, Jefferson
Vineyards |
|
|
The wineries of the Monticello
appellation fulfill a vision of Thomas Jefferson whose
aim was to produce exceptional quality wines like those
he had tasted on his travels to Europe. Today, 500
acres of vitis vinifera vineyards surround Jefferson's
historic Monticello estate. In just over two
decades, the wine industry in the Charlottesville area
has flourished, achieving national and international
acclaim.
The city of Charlottesville lies within
the borders of the Monticello Viticultural Area and
their city council has declared it the "Wine Capital of
Virginia." Within the boundaries of the federally
designated area are 21 farm wineries, the largest
concentration in Virginia, forming the Monticello Wine
Trail.
The wineries vary from the largest,
producing over 30 thousand cases to smaller operations
of several thousand cases. They all have their own
grape plantings, although many also lease vineyards in
order to increase their production.
Follow the
Monticello Wine Trail and discover your favorite
Monticello area winery. Enjoy breathtaking views,
sample award-winning wines and meet the people who today
are producing world-class wines in the heart of
Virginia. www.monticellowinetrail.org

Trail: Oakencroft Vineyards &

Thomas Jefferson's longstanding interest in

VIRGINIA VINEYARD FOCUS (Third in the

The
Vineyard at Point Breeze Virginia's
Eastern Shore By L. Kathryn
Martin

Named in the 19th century for the
Chesapeake Bay breezes which roam inland to the head of
Craddock Creek, Point Breeze is truly an idyllic
place. Having been in Indiana conducting
archaeological investigations for seven months, the
smell of salt and vistas of shimmering blue-green water
were truly a welcome sight. I couldn't wait to
taste the warm grapes we were soon to harvest, and even
though I was on vacation, the anticipation of hard work
made me smile. My family works with
relish.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Rock
Stephens and his wife Kris had strict criteria for their
next job. Spending more time together, being near
the water and a zero commute were high on the
list. Located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, which
has its own AVA (American Viticultural Area), The
Vineyard at Point Breeze is now their collaborative
love.
Specializing in Merlot and Chardonnay,
nearly all of the twelve acres under vine are devoted to
five clones of those varietals, while a smattering of
Syrah, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon were added
for blending and research. Intense research has
yielded sound decisions, and yet, as Kris explains,
"It's not always the easy road. We chose a lyre
trellis system because of our fertile soil.
Sometimes it feels like three times as much work as VSP
(Vertical Shoot Position, but we've definitely seen
improvement in grape quality. While we are not a
licensed winery, winning two international amateur
winemaking awards is proof we're on the right
track."
Of course the barrel room is another fun
part of the business (hurray for the farm winery act!),
and a visit home is always filled with learning
opportunities. "Today we're checking on the
Chardonnay," Rock tells me. "It's about half way
through its fermentation." We enter the cool confines of
an aromatic heaven and companionably toil over this
year's product.
At the house the phone rings off
the hook with Rock's other duties. As President of
the Virginia Vineyards Association (www.virginiavineyardsassociation.com)
and Vice-chair of the Virginia Wine Board, someone's
always calling to pick his brain. Kris is also
busy, sitting on the county committee for
Accomack-Northampton Farm Service Agency. "I want to
better understand my community and stay involved," Kris
said.
And like most rural settings, the Shore is
a place that takes some getting to know. It must
be hard for my well-traveled parents to be so far away
from metropolitan life, but the love of wine and of
growing things replaces any superficial
sputtering. When the fruit is gone and the vines
become golden torches, fall is here and the peace which
only hard work can win is reward enough.
The
Vineyard at Point Breeze is located at GPS: N37'
34' W75' 54'.

WINE
REVIEWS By
David Dobersztyn, Salute! Wine Market
|
|
For October we have selected two wines from
one of our favorite Virginia vintners, Jim Law of Linden
Vineyards. Jim has been working his Hardscrabble
vineyard since the rebirth of the Virginia wine industry
in the mid 80's. He is most noted for his Bordeaux style
reds which everyone raves about, so we are recommending
two of his white wines which sometimes get overlooked.
(Pictured to the left, Jim Law of Linden
Vineyards conducts wine seminar.)
2006 Linden
Vidal Riesling - $18 We're often asked to pair wine
with "spicy foods" like Thai. The Vidal Riesling is one
of our best recommendations. The aromas of this wine
include pineapple, kiwi, honeydew melon, mango and fruit
tree blossom. On the palate you'll find mouth filling
flavors of pink grapefruit, ripe peach and orange peel
that finish with a burst of allspice.
 2006 Linden
Seyval - $16 2006 was a very good year at
Linden for whites with quality that could outshine the
1999 vintage. We love the minerality and zest of the '06
Seyval and consider it one of the best in the state. On
the nose you'll find pungent aromas of lemon thyme and
fresh straw. This wine is dry, light to medium bodied,
with a finish that is fresh & bracing. We often
recommend this wine with fish such as trout or chilled
oysters.

| THE VIRGINIA WINE OF THE MONTH CLUB
OCTOBER SELECTION
By Sharon
Bradshaw |
|
The Virginia Wine of the Month
for October comes from Kluge Estate Winery and
Vineyard. The two selections are Albemarle
Simply Red 2003 and Albemarle Rosé
2005.
A Bordeaux-style blend made from Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Albemarle Simply Red
2003 is tinted a brilliant, intense ruby red and
exhibits soft tannins, medium density with a complex
mineral expression. There are nuances of
blackberry, black currant with delicate licorice,
vanilla smoky and spicy notes. Best when served
about 65º F. Wonderful companion to appetizers
like beef carpaccio, baked brie, also salads, pizza and
cheeses.
Fruity and elegant, Albemarle Rosé 2005, is
an exciting blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot. It bursts with romance, passion and
the flavor of the land. There are floral nuances
of fresh berries, white peach, cherry and raspberry
with delicate licorice, vanilla and roasted almond
notes. Pair with smoked and grilled fish, Greek
salad, or any Asian and Mediterranean main
courses.

Cellars in Woodstock, VA and writes for the

Club.)
