Vol. IV, Issue No. 3
March 2009
Dear Friend of Virginia Wine:

It's no surprise to us that of all the features in our newsletter, the most popular are the monthly recipes.  After all, a loaf of bread and a jug of wine are the staff of life.

So, this month we decided to bring you two wonderfully delicious, but very different  recipes, both with origins in the Big Easy . . . New Orleans.  One is from the recent Mardi Gras celebration at Cooper Vineyards, where we enjoyed several servings of very tasty Jambalaya (see "We Were There").  The second recipe is a Muffuletta Sandwich from the popular Wine House Bar and Bistro in Norfolk's Ghent district.  We hope you enjoy both, and if you have a special recipe you would like to share with us, send it to info@vawinelover.com.

Virginia wineries are beginning to come to life again with barrel tastings and other activities which you'll find listed under Wine Events.  We've timed the March newsletter for early delivery to remind you of the Virginia Wine Expo at the Richmond Convention Center on February 27, 28 and March 1.  You won't want to miss this extraordinary event featuring the finest of Virginia wines and culinary delights.

We hope by now you have read the new Spring issue of Virginia Wine Lover magazine.  If not, be sure to pick up a copy at the growing list of locations around the state.  And, you can subscribe at www.virginiawinelover.com/subscriptions.

Frank Britt Cheers!

THE GREAT GRAPE RIDE ON THE MONTICELLO WINE TRAIL
By Dezel Quillen, Founder, Photographer & Wine Writer Virginia Vine Spot  www.myvinespot.com

Wine Bottles

I recently saddled up with a motley collection of industry professionals, budding wine enthusiasts, and wine bloggers to take a great-grape ride on the Monticello wine trail. Good and bad news here. Bad news first - of the 20 plus wineries on the Monticello wine trial we made appointments to visit only six of them. The good news - we have about seventeen left to go, so Monticello wine trail, look out, you will see us again!

Jefferson's "New Virginia", also known as Charlottesville is steeped in history, beautiful scenery, twisting country roads, horse farms, and dotted with rolling green hills and vista views. While all the wineries on the trail share a reputation for genuine southern hospitality, fun drinking to exceptional quality wines, and charm-filled tasting rooms, each offers a unique experience that is as different as the wines they produce.

Plan a day or weekend to visit the wineries on the Monticello wine trail. As you drive from winery to winery, you'll enjoy the picturesque views and savor the moment. During our weekend trip on the Monticello Wine Trail we visited Veritas Vineyard & Winery, King Family Vineyards, White Hall Vineyards, Blenheim Vineyards, Jefferson Vineyards, and last but not least, Keswick Vineyards.  These wineries offered great wines, a highly knowledgeable staff, a warm and friendly atmosphere, spectacular views, and a memorable wine tasting experience. One of the best times to visit is spring, so mark your calendars; the seasonal warmth is almost here. However, there is really no bad time to visit, so make a date with the Monticello wine trail and lose yourself in a day or two of tasting Virginia wines, we did!

Happy Sipping!

VERAMAR WINES WIN AT AMERICA'S LARGEST WINE COMPETITION
(From Veramar Vineyards Press Release)

Veramar Wines

Veramar Vineyard, the award-winning Virginia Shenandoah Valley producer of premium wines, achieved one of the industry's highest honors recently with the announcement of the winners of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, America's largest wine competition with nearly 5,000 entries from around the world.  Veramar's 2007 Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay each were awarded bronze medals in the 2009 competition.

"It is always an honor for our wines to be recognized in such a significant way by an esteemed competition such as the San Francisco International Competition" remarked Veramar Vineyard's proprietor Jim Bogaty. "It's especially significant that both our Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay were honored in light of the growing prominence of these varietals in Virginia.  These awards continue to be a great compliment to our winemaker, Justin Bogaty.

"We have demonstrated once again that growers in Clarke County Virginia, using proper management practices, are capable of producing fruit that, in the hands of outstanding winemakers, can be made into award-winning wines," said Justin Bogaty.

Veramar Vineyard earns accolades in competitions from around the world. It is a small, family-run winery dedicated to producing naturally dry, full-bodied wines.  The vineyard is situated on a private 100-acre estate in the heart of Northern Virginia Hunt County at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Shenandoah River, a 55 minute drive from Washington DC.

While visiting Veramar Vineyard and the Shenandoah Valley, you won't want to miss sites that are filled with history, natural glory and international award winning wines. Find this respite in the land where legends of civil war heroes and explorers survive.  Discover a quaint vineyard near the banks of the Shenandoah River.  Experience a far away feeling so close you can taste it.

RECIPE FOR MUFFULETTA FROM NORFOLK'S WINEHOUSE BAR AND BISTRO
By Brad Smith, Owner Winehouse Bar & Bistro

The Winehouse Bar & Bistro Vault

The Winehouse Bar and Bistro in Norfolk's Ghent district features a 2000 bottle cellar located at the entrance to the restaurant and surrounded by brick with glass windows exposing the wine.  The Virginia wine featured is Barboursville's 2006 Chardonnay.  Our focus is exclusively small production wineries, and we pride ourselves on finding the unknown gem.  The restaurant menu has influence ranging from Creole to Thai but we are best known for crab cakes and an aged beef filet.

The Winehouse kitchen used to be tiny; now it's huge. Although our executive chef Adam hated that first tiny kitchen with no extra storage, it taught us to insure that everything you eat is fresh. The lettuce is crisp, the fruit is sweet and the food is unmatched.

Cajun influence exists all over the Winehouse menu.  At lunch we feature one of the most unique sandwiches ever to come out of The Big Easy, the Muffuletta, which originated in New Orleans' French Quarter at Central Grocery in 1906.  Believe it or not, its primary influence is Italian. We serve ours with thinly sliced Capacola, Pepperoni, Ham and Salami topped with fresh Mozzarella on a toast French Bowle. The key to this classic is the generous amount of Kalamata olive relish spread on both sides of the bun.

CRU CLASSIC, A VINTAGE GLASS FROM FORTESSA
By Jean Zuckerman, Fortessa

Cru Classic Glasses

"Cru Classic," the glamorous new stemware by Fortessa/Schott Zwiesel, blends the qualities that, as the name implies, enhance the experience of vintage wines:  curving, beautifully-belled bowls, with ample capacity to allow swirling and releasing the wine's flavor and aroma; tapered shapes to capture the bouquet; and slender, but sturdy stems.
Styled with elegance, the new designs are made of TritanĀ® crystal, through a unique technology which produces a pure, hard, brilliant glass - with the added benefit of modest price.  The modern Cru Classic designs have a superb brilliance that shows off varietal color and clarity, contributing to the pleasure of fine wines.  And as all Tritan crystal, the stems are dishwasher-safe and highly resistant to breakage and chipping.

A perfect balance of design and function, the new wine stems come in 11 sizes and shapes for specific varieties, offering a glass for every serving, every menu pairing.

Fortessa's Cru Classic collection will be available in spring, 2009, in time for the summer wine fest season.  With its list of assets Fortessa/Schott Zwiesel stemware makes a case for taking a place on the home table for all dining occasions.
