Vol. V, Issue No. 3
March 2010
Dear Friend of Virginia Wine:

We spent last weekend in Richmond at the third annual Virginia Wine EXPO...what a great event that reflected the growth in wineries and the increasing number of Virginia wine lovers.  More than 7,000 were in attendance.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Governor's Wine Awards, and  congratulations go to the winners we have listed in this issue.  Best in Show went to King Family Vineyards for their 2007 Meritage.  The entire King Family was present for the occasion and to see David King recognized for his exceptional work on behalf of Virginia wines.  In his remarks, Governor McDonnell recognized the importance of the wine industry to Virginia's economy and pledged his support of funding for the Wine Marketing Board.

We had good feedback from many attendees at the EXPO who look to the Virginia Wine Lover e-Newsletter for the latest news and upcoming events.  Your comments and suggestions are always appreciated...just email us at info@vawinelover.com.

Frank Britt
Cheers!

FEATURED WINERY OF THE MONTH:
PHILIP CARTER WINERY TAKES GOLD AT TWO NATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND HONORED INTERNATIONALLY

Philip Carter Winery landed squarely on the national and international stage this year winning gold medals at two of the nation's most prestigious wine competitions, the 2009 American Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition, and the 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition - the only Virginia winery to win gold at both national competitions.

COOPER VINEYARDS BELOVED LUCY

Cooper Vineyards beloved hound, Lucy, was found injured on the side of the road near the winery Memorial Day weekend 2001. Despite being starved with multiple injuries including gunshot wounds to her front feet and a broken leg, Lucy made a miraculous recovery and has enjoyed the past 8 years as Cooper Vineyards mascot (with her two poodle brothers, Reuben and Maurice, sadly, recently deceased).

VINO VERITAS SPIRITUS

The translation to this new spin on the well known oenological phrase is: "in wine is spiritual truth". Now in its third season, In Vino Veritas Spiritus is a somewhat outside the box Christian ministry set in the splendor of the Virginia wine country. On Sunday mornings at 11 AM throughout the growing season, itinerant vineyard preacher Kim J. Ciftci (formerly of McLean Bible Church) delivers a scriptural, spiritual message at one of several local wineries, the sermons from the vineyards. The messages all draw their truth for living from the many Biblical references to wine, grapes, the vineyard, or the processes involved in winemaking.

HAVE YOUR OWN VIRGINIA WINERY!

Make your own wine, ride your horses and fish in your own 7 acre lake!  Savoy-Lee Winery located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on 117 acres with enough room for an equestrian center, a fully stocked 7 acre lake for fishing and a 3,500 sq ft house that could be a B & B.
