March 2008
Vineyards, Wineries, Special Events, Festivals & Expos!

Dear Friend of Virginia Wine:

The success of two recent wine events is a testament to the growing popularity of Virginia wines.  The Virginia Wine Showcase in early February in Chantilly followed a week later by the Virginia Wine Expo in Richmond attracted thousands of people who were there to taste and learn about Virginia wines. We were proud to serve as a sponsor for both events.

Virginia Wine Lover magazine will also participate in the Washington, D.C. International Wine & Food Festival at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, February 29 to March 2.  This will be the ninth annual festival, attracting over 200 wineries and 800 wines for sampling.

We have been overwhelmed by the interest in Virginia Wine Lover magazine by the festival goers, as well as the positive feedback we have received about this newsletter.  As our readers know, the magazine will premier in early May as Virginia's largest lifestyle magazine.  Subscribe today!  Just scroll down to the end of the newsletter!

Horton Vineyards 7th Annual Mardi Gras Celebration
February 2-3, 2008
By Neil Glaser

On February 2 & 3, 2008 Horton Vineyards held its Seventh Annual Mardi Gras Celebration.  The weather was perfect for traveling to your favorite winery and over 400 guests arrived throughout the afternoon.  Many had spectacular Mardi Gras costumes with beads and masks.  One guest wrote to Horton after the event, "BRAVO to the Horton Gang for another really marvelous Mardi Gras!  Horton remains unequalled for genuine, warm hospitality, timely treats (chili, gumbo & King Cakes), a great variety of wines, and collector-quality glasses!"  After receiving their beads and glasses, guests could taste over 40 of Horton's offerings and then take a cellar tour with barrel tastings of the 2007 reds and whites, plus a little bit of port.  The event was a great success and fun was had by all.

The Virginia Wine Showcase
February 9-10, 2008
By Dezel Quillen, www.myvinespot.com

The Virginia Wine Showcase, held February 9-10 at the Dulles Expo Center, was the very first of its kind for Virginia wine events. This upscale indoor event, presented by Capital Celebrations, was a two day showcasing and promoting of over 300 of Virginia's award wining hand-crafted wines.  Under one roof, this impressive event brought together over 35 of Virginia's top wineries, a number of local arts and craft vendors, and all sorts of tasty and fanciful foods. Additionally, there were also a number of educational and entertaining wine seminars offered, for both the novice and seasoned wine enthusiast.  And no event is complete without some jazzy tunes! Needless to say, there was live entertainment on hand to enjoy.

Virginia Wine Expo
February 16-17, 2008
By Alex Papajohn, Virginia Wine Expo Organizer

The inaugural Virginia Wine Expo (VWE) was a huge success, attracting over 5,500 attendees over two days. The 2nd Annual VWE has already been scheduled for February 7 - 8, 2009 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The VWE was a first-of-its-kind event in the Richmond area.  Never before had an upscale, indoor state-focused trade and consumer wine event been held.  It presented a tremendous networking opportunity for the trade and an educational one for serious wine drinkers, as well as occasional wine drinkers too.  Attendees from around the Commonwealth came not only to taste Virginia wine (many of the wineries at the Expo were new to Richmond) but also to taste Virginia's Finest gourmet food and enjoy the chef demonstrations and wine seminars.

Next year's Virginia Wine Expo will offer many improvements and some additional events.  The space for the event will be doubled.  Wider aisles, a much larger Wine Garden, additional water stations, a map of the exhibition floor, more registration lines and other improvements are on the way.  A winemakers' dinner and trade gala,  legislative reception, launch party and champagne brunch are also under consideration.

Laissez les bons temps roulez...at Cooper Vineyards!
February 23-24, 2008
By D'Angelo Robinson and Geoffrey Cooper

The good times were rolling at the Eighth Annual Mardi Gras party at Cooper Vineyards last weekend. Their most festive event of the year, Cooper treated visitors to traditional King Cake (shipped in by air from Louisiana just for the occasion), Cousin Jean Cooper's award winning Jambalaya, favorite New Orleans style music and, of course, fine Virginia wines.  This year's guest winery invited to share in the fun times was Hartwood, which is known for their dry red and semi-dry white wines.  The weather was cooperative, with cold temperatures outside setting off warm good times inside the winery.  You won't want to miss Cooper's Ninth Annual Mardi Gras event next year!

AMERICA'S POLO CUP WINE COMPETITION
By Patrick Evans-Hylton, Editor Virginia Wine Lover magazine
America's Cup of Polo

In each issue of Virginia Wine Lover Magazine we celebrate Virginia wines, along with the personalities that make them, the events that surround them, and the food and lifestyle that pair with them.

Therefore, we are very excited about celebrating Virginia vino in a very special way.

Join us May 9 and 10 at the 2008 Land Rover America's Polo Cup at Historic Morven Park in Leesburg as we announce the winners of our first-ever Polo Cup Wine Competition.

Wineries across the state have applied and submitted some of their very finest vintages. Soon, notable wine experts will gather to taste and judge and award the best-of-the-best bronze, silver and gold medal awards in these categories: White Wines; Red Wines; Late Harvest & Dessert Wines; Rose, Blush & Pink Wines; and Sparkling Wines.

Entries will be judged double-blind using the modified Davis 20-Point system. Virginia wine gurus Willis Logan of the Virginia Wine of the Month Club and Chad Zakaib of Jefferson Vineyards have provided invaluable information to help us develop this into an exciting, fair and notable competition.

I would like to personally invite you to join all of us at Virginia Wine Lover Magazine at the announcement of winners at the 2008 Land Rover America's Polo Cup & Virginia Wine Lover Magazine Wine Competition and help us raise a glass to the outstanding vintages that make Virginia such a wonderful - and tasty - place to live.

If you can't make it by the polo cup, send me an email anytime to say hello and share your Virginia wine story:

FAUQUIER COUNTY WINE TRAIL
By Catherine Payne, Fauquier County Department of Economic Development
Loudon Wine Trail

At the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just 45 minutes from Washington, D.C., Fauquier County has quietly become a leader in the Virginia wine industry.  The number of wineries has doubled since 2004, making Fauquier one of the top three wine-producing counties in Virginia.

Fauquier County currently boasts 16 wineries & vineyards, and all are part of the new Fauquier County Wine Trail.  Each winery within the wine trail offers a different experience with its own wines, flavors, views and atmosphere.  The county's rolling land and rich soil make it a natural for growing quality vines, and Fauquier-area winemakers are winning national and international competitions.

While enjoying the tastes of Fauquier County, visitor's can also take in breathtaking vistas, stay in one of the quaint Bed & Breakfasts, spend a day at the spa, explore small towns and villages, and enjoy unique shops and restaurants. WINERY & VINEYARD OF THE MONTH:
CHATHAM VINEYARDS
"Two Generations of Virginia Wine Growing"
By Mills Wehner

John WehnerThe Wehner family has been growing wine in Virginia for two generations.  The first vineyards were planted in 1970 in Great Falls.  In 1999, Chatham Vineyards were planted by Jon Wehner and his wife, Mills, at historic Chatham Farm on the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia's Eastern Shore.  The vineyards contain more than 20 acres of high-density, VSP trellised French vinifera varietals Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.  The vineyards are cane pruned during the winter months to balance the vines and limit yields. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted before pressing to ensure the highest quality. Grapes not vinified onsite are sold to other wineries in Virginia. The Wehner family also owns and operates Eastern Shore Classic Wines to distribute their award-winning Church Creek label to restaurants and retailers in Virginia.

The winery was constructed in 2005 and currently has an annual production capacity of 5,000 cases.  State-of-the-art European equipment and French and Virginia oak cooperage are used for winemaking. Future plans include the relocation and restoration of a 1890s farmhouse adjoining the winery to serve as a tasting room and special events facility.  The winery, offering complimentary tours and tastings, is open to the public Monday through Thursday 10 AM to 5 PM and on Sundays from 12 noon to 5 PM.  Wines include a steel-fermented Dijon Chardonnay and the Vintner's Blend reserve, favorites that sell-out every year.

Chatham VineyardsThe land at Chatham, which overlooks Church Creek, was patented in 1640. The Federal-period brick house, Chatham, was built in 1818 by Major Scarborough Pitts and named for William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham and friend of the American Revolution. The historic outbuildings, barns and two early 1900s homes on the property have been renovated in recent years. Chatham Farm has been a working farm for four centuries.

Virginia's Eastern Shore is an enchanting place of family farms, small towns and waterside villages located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Watermen still work the tides and farmers plow the fields trailed by sea gulls. Fresh seafood, history, ecotourism and open space abound on "the Shore".

For more information on Chatham wines, visit www.chathamvineyards.net or call 757-678-5588.

A B&B FOR WINE LOVERS:
RIDGE VIEW IN MADISON COUNTY
By Jack North, President, B&B Association of Virginia

Ridgeview Patio

What could be more relaxing than sipping some fine Virginia wine and gazing at the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains?  If you are looking for this type of experience, the Ridge View B&B, located in the center of Virginia Wine Country, is your destination.

Situated in Madison County, this inviting Bed & Breakfast is a beautifully restored farmhouse surrounded by 17 acres in the quaint, and quiet, village of Rochelle. Three wineries, Barboursville, Horton and Prince Michel, are within 15 minutes of Ridge View, and many others are within a short drive.

Virginia Wines at Ridgeview

Ridge View guests are treated to an exceptional variety of Virginia wines, and Innkeepers, Frank and Eleanor, are ready to help plan wine tasting field trips.  As Virginia wine country has become a favorite destination of vacationers, especially from the Metropolitan Washington area, Ridge View is perfectly located to allow guests to take advantage of the bountiful grape harvests and numerous wineries.

Modern day Rochelle is located near a Civil War site called "Jack's Shop" where one of the two battles fought in Madison County occurred.  During the Battle of "Jack's Shop," J.E.B. Stuart was almost captured by the Union Calvary under Generals Kilpatrick and John Buford on September 22, 1863.
