Vol. VI, Issue No. 7
July
2011 |
Dear Frank,
Congratulations to
Williamsburg Winery and the eight regional winners in
our First Annual Visitor's Choice Awards! Over
10,500 visitors cast votes for their favorite wineries.
We recommend a personal visit to discover first hand
what makes these winners so special. (Article
follows.)
July begins with a weekend of Red,
White and Blue celebrations to mark America's 235th
Birthday. It continues throughout the month with
celebrations of Virginia wine in all parts of the
commonwealth and in all kinds of imaginative ways.
We've got some celebrating to do ourselves this
month. When we launched the Official Virginia Wine
Lover™ in June 2006, it was basically an online primer
about the wine industry and wine facts. Five years
and 60 issues later, our eNewsletter is a popular
publication with entertaining and informative articles
about Virginia wine, the people who make them and the
people who enjoy them. Our database of Virginia Wine
Lovers has grown from a few hundred to over
40,000!
July's Winery of the Month is the
impressive Sweely Estate Winery in picturesque Madison
County. Featured Festivals of the Week include the
Horse and Hound Wine Festival, July 9 at Johnson's
Orchards in Bedford; the Daylily and Wine Festival ™,
July 16 and 17 at Andre Viette's Nursery in
Fishersville; and Save Our Food's Virginia Food &
Wine Festival, July 24 at Meadow Event Park in Doswell.
Be sure to plan your July weekends around these
outstanding events.
Cheers to Summer. And,
Cheers to the Visitor's Choice Award Winners!

SWEELY
ESTATE WINERY |

Framed by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, Sweely
Estate Winery is strategically situated in the heart of
Virginia wine country just off US 29 between
Charlottesville and Culpeper. This picturesque
Madison County winery is located on Wolftown-Hood Road
(Route 230 West), a convenient drive from all parts of
the state. In 2004 the Sweely Family purchased
the historic Weaver farm in Madison. Jess and
Sharon Sweely had a plan for the property that would
include a vineyard and winery producing world-class
wine. They envisioned an old-world hospitality
center where they would offer educational opportunities
centered on their passions for great food, wine and art
with their guests. Today, their plans are
fulfilled in Sweely Estate Winery, an elegant event
facility with beautifully landscaped outdoor areas and
breathtaking views of the mountains beyond. The
18,000 square foot hospitality center was completed in
2009 and includes tasting room, retail boutique, art
gallery, culinary center, wine library, barrel room and
an event center for weddings and conferences that holds
200 guests.
The
Sweely's are committed to good stewardship of the land
in Madison County. They were already renowned for
their Acorn Hill Farm, an equestrian center run by one
of the Sweely daughters.
Sweely
boast 40 acres of vineyards, each with 1,850
vines. Varietals include merlot, cabernet franc,
malbec, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, pinot noir,
viognier, vidal blanc, muscat, pinot gris and petit
manseng. According to Jess Sweely, winemaker
Frantz Ventre sets the style of wine for which the
winery is known. Frantz grew up in the
world-renowned Bordeaux wine region near St. Emilion,
France, working in his friend's family vineyard. He has
a Master's Degree in Oenology from the University of
Bordeaux. Franz's approach to wine making is in
the well proven, old world style that relies on focusing
great attention in the vineyard and then nurturing the
fruit in the cellar. Sweely has built a
26,000 square foot state-of-the-art gravity flow
production facility. The 3-level building allows the
fruit to move through the process with the benefit of
gravity flow versus the harsher pumping alternative.
From grape reception through transfer of the juice into
the fermenting and aging tanks or barrels, this process
provides a gentler handling of the fruit, resulting in
superior wines.
Sweely
Estate Winery has received many awards for their wines,
including most recently, a Gold Medal in the 2011 Dallas
Morning News International Competition for their 2007
Cabernet Franc. For a complete listing of Sweely
Estate wines, visit the website at www.sweelyestatewinery.com
The
pastoral vistas of Madison County along with the award
winning wines and amenities of Sweely Estate Winery make
for a perfect weekend outing. Don't miss it!

2010 with Steven Spurrier, Chairman of Decanter
World Wine Awards and "quintessential voice of
wine appreciation". | For
the third consecutive year, Virginia wineries
participated in the London International Wine
Fair. It is one of the largest trade-only events
of its kind with annual visitor attendance in excess of
13,000. Now in its 31st year, LIWF was held on May
17-19.
Participation in the Fair has
contributed to a growing awareness and demand for
Virginia wines in the UK. Seven wineries presented
select wines at an exhibit organized by the Southern US
Trade Association (SUSTA), the Virginia Wine Marketing
Office and New Horizon Wines. Virginia Secretary
of Agriculture Todd Haymore met with wine trade
representatives from the UK during the Fair.

| VISITOR'S CHOICE
AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED |
|

Congratulations
to Williamsburg Winery, Virginia's
Favorite Winery selected by participants in the 2011
Visitor's Choice Award sponsored by the Official
Virginia Wine Lover. Williamsburg Winery will be
featured as the Winery of the Month in an upcoming
eNewsletter issue.
An astounding 10,519 visitors
to the state's almost 200 wineries cast a vote for their
favorites, with Williamsburg Winery receiving the
greatest overall number of votes. To assure
accuracy and fairness, all duplicate entries were
removed before the final count.
If you have not
visited the Williamsburg Winery, this is certainly a
recommendation to do so. No doubt, award winning
wines, as well as the history behind the winery, make it
a favorite of visitors. It was the site of the first
planting of grapes in Virginia in keeping with the
Twelfth Acte of 1619 that required landholders to plant
vines for their own consumption. Some 350 years
later Patrick Duffeler would again plant vines and build
his winery on that same land. A recent addition to
the property is Wedmore Place, a small European style
country hotel, making Williamsburg Winery an
all-inclusive destination. www.williamsburgwinery.com

COOKING
WITH WINES
A
Book by Rowena Morrel
Editor
of In The Kitchen Magazine |
About 10 years ago, I was asked to
produce and host a program about cooking with wines at
the Montpelier Wine Festival. Various area chefs
were invited to present cooking demonstrations
throughout a two-day festival. Naturally people
wanted the recipes that were demonstrated. As a
result I wrote a small book "Cooking with Wines"
designed as a take away at the festival. Now an
accumulation of wine festival recipes available along
with many others, too complex to demonstrate outdoors,
are accumulated in an ebook, "Cooking with Wines".
It includes over 40 recipes along with general rules and
tips about cooking with wines.
Throughout July
and August, you may register for this
FREE ebook (an $8 value),
which includes recipes for sauces, fowl, game and red
meats, fish, Hors
d'Oeuvres and desserts. Then, come back to
read the many interesting articles throughout In
The Kitchen Online each month www.inthekitchen.com

HORSE
AND HOUND WINE FESTIVAL
Johnson's
Orchards, Bedford |
Cheers to the seventh annual Horse and
Hound Festival, an extraordinarily unique event that
attracts wine lovers, dog lovers, horse lovers and
everyone in between. It is scheduled for July 9,
from 11:00 to 6:00, on the spacious and picturesque
grounds of Johnson's Orchards in Bedford County,
home to the Peaks of Otter Winery. Wineries of the
Bedford Wine Trail will join in the festivities with
tastings and purchases.
The Horse and Hound Wine
Festival is the place you can enjoy taking your children
and their grandparents, according to Nancy Johnson,
festival coordinator. Dogs are especially invited as
paying guests and have the opportunity to participate
and receive trophies and ribbons in events such as lure
coursing, muskrat racing, and agility and obedience
trials.
Horses of all breeds parade for ribbons
and monetary prizes for the entertainment of
attendees who are allowed to meet and greet the horses
and riders. People are treated well also! There are
tents for shade or showers, live music for listening and
dancing, food of all varieties, many wines to sample,
shopping for arts and crafts, and ice-cold towels for
cooling the July heat. New for this year is the
"Kiddie Korral" with activities for children of all ages
throughout the day. There will also be pony and horse
rides for an additional charge.
Proceeds from
this year's festival will go to Commonwealth Search and
Rescue, Brook Hill Retirement Center for Horses,
All-American Mutt Rescue and the Bedford Humane Society.

AFTON MOUNTAIN
VINEYARDS
June
19 |
|
If you like the mountains, Nelson County
is as good as it gets, and it's home to a number of
wineries, including Afton Mountain Vineyards. On the
recent afternoon we stopped by, we were pleased to talk
with owners, Elizabeth and Tony Smith and their son
Hunter. The winery's location is idyllic and the wines
are very fine. www.aftonmountainwinery.com |
|
|
|
Just down the road from Afton Mountain, we
pulled in at Veritas. There was lots of activity
in the tasting room and excitement in preparation for a
wedding that evening. The facility and beautifully
landscaped grounds were created to accommodate social
events, and they are held frequently. We sipped a
glass of Viognier as we walked around and admired the
vistas of the Blue Ridge. www.veritaswines.com |
VIRGINIA WINE GRAPE
FESTIVAL
June
25 |
|
We could not have asked for a more
beautiful day with a nice breeze and temperature in the
80's. The Farmville festival was well planned, the music
enjoyable and 15 wineries were offering tastings.
The event benefits the STEPS Centre, a non-profit that
trains and employs people with
disabilities. |
