Vol. IV, Issue No. 7
July 2009
Dear Friend of Virginia Wine:

Thousands of Virginians are on the road this summer visiting wineries and enjoying festivals around the state.  Virginia Wine Lover has been right there with them, including trips to the 17th Annual Roanoke Wine Fest on June 13 and a "double whammy" on June 20th to the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail Festival (the first annual for the new wine trail) at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton.  (By the way, if you haven't visited, the Frontier Museum, you've missed out on one of Virginia's most unique attractions.)  Our second stop that day was the Amherst-Nelson Summer Solstice Wine & Farm Festival.  A brand new event, it was held at the old Amherst stockyards in an open-air, spacious and roofed facility that was perfect for the event.

If you missed out in June, there's much more waiting for you in July.  Just take a look at the winery events scheduled over the Fourth!  Also in this issue, we introduce you to Aspen Dale Winery at the Barn in Delaplane, Virginia's newest winery.  We also recommend an overnight at the Cape Charles House Bed and Breakfast as you visit the wineries on the Eastern Shore.

Frank Britt
Cheers!  And we hope to see you on the trail in July (the wine trail, that is).

VIRGINIA'S NEWEST WINERY
ASPEN DALE WINERY AT THE BARN
By Shay McNeal-Poulin, Owner

Today's lifestyle is often overcharged by the frantic pace of living in the contemporary world. To escape this feeling and rebalance your life, the perfect solution creeps into your mind - a day at a winery with a bottle of wine while you shed the cares and pressures of the city.  Just the thought of the serene nature of vineyards and the solitary craft of winemaking speaks to you of the ideal escape. So you drive to the countryside and your thirst for calm and tranquility ruminates in your mind as you are sure you have found the perfect panacea for the stress relief you demand.

While wrapped in this ideal fantasy you arrive at a winery and realize that it is unfortunately - more of the same.  People, people and noise, noise.  What happened to the fantasy?   Did I take a wrong turn?  Wine is such a romantic notion - where is the palate proof?  Any pairings in sight that I might introduce to my friends at our next dinner?  Where's my quiet corner of this romantic world?  Dismayed, you realize that it is more of the same.  "I want my unique experience wrapped with the demand for excellent wines and a more genteel atmosphere." you hear whispering from your burdened psyche.

We, at Aspen Dale Winery at the Barn, understand this desire because that is exactly what drove us to purchase this land over a decade ago and to recently establish our winery in the fashion we have determined to present to the wine-loving community of Northern Virginia. Every day we endeavor to capture the best of Colonial and European wine-making techniques and blendings of the highest quality and most outstanding wines possible. Another of our mandates is to make our estate wines in an uncharacteristic style - largely by hand in a manual fashion the old-fashion way.

BED & BREAKFAST OF THE MONTH
CAPE CHARLES B&B
By Bruce & Carol Evans, Owners

Can such a place still exist?  You deserve to find out!

Cross the 21 mile stretch of Bay Bridge Tunnel from Virginia Beach and discover one of our state's best kept secrets........Virginia's Eastern Shore.  Tucked between the broad waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this rural peninsula is the longest stretch of natural coastline remaining on the eastern seaboard.

Once on the Shore, you will immediately become aware of the remoteness and tranquility.  It will be 10 miles before the first traffic light where signs direct you to take a left hand turn into the small town of Cape Charles.  Fronted by the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Beach, is this railroad town incorporated in 1886, a hidden gem of a destination.  The Historic District is just seven blocks square.

Cape Charles House Bed and Breakfast, as seen on HGTV, and recipients of the Governor's Award for B&B Hospitality, was built in 1912. This Colonial Revival has been welcoming guests since 1994, when Bruce and Carol Evans, the third owners, lovingly restored the opulent property. The lovely and spacious five guest rooms have sitting areas and en suite private bathrooms, several with Jacuzzi tub/showers.  Awaken to the smell of freshly ground coffee, Cape Charles House signature muffins and an elegant full gourmet breakfast.  Carol has written for a national cooking magazine and morning meals receive rave reviews for being unique and delicious.

Unwind with conversations with other guests on the front porch from 5 O'clock on with wine and Carol's own Boursin cheese spread made from herbs in Bruce's garden.  Dine at restaurants that celebrate local seafood, vegetables, fruits, and wines. Paddle, tour and taste the wines of Chatham or Holly Grove vineyards by kayak.

Bruce and Carol welcome house parties!  Get a group together and reserve the B&B for a weekend and let them help plan your activities.  Seek the hidden hamlets where local artisans share their wares.  "Drink in" the Eastern Shore at our award winning wineries, including the nearby Chatham Vineyards and Holly Grove Vineyards.  Bay Creek Marina and Golf Resort are just minutes away.

Mention this article when making your reservations and receive a complimentary bottle of Eastern Shore wine. Hope to see you in Cape Charles soon!

Lucy's Weekend
May 23, 2009
Cooper Vineyards

Cooper Vineyards mascot and found hound, Lucy held her 5th annual Memorial Day weekend benefit for the Richmond SPCA, which was yet another sunny wine and dog extravaganza. Two and four legged guests enjoyed wine tasting from Cooper Vineyards and guest winery, James River Cellars, artists & craft vendors and live bluegrass from Scattered, Smothered & Covered.  A special touch was a blessing of the animals by Rev. Phyllis Min on Sunday.  Lucy was happy that lucky owners went home with new 4 legged friends.

By Dezel Quillen, Founder, Photographer & Wine Writer - Virginia Vine Spot

Billed as "Think global, Taste local, again lived up to its theme and name. The event was a weekend of sensory delight and adventure that offered delicious local foods from some of the areas top chefs, as well as wines to taste from all over the globe, including excellent local flavor from Virginia and Maryland. There was also cooking demonstrations, wine seminars, live entertainment, and much more! Also, for the beer lovers, there was a beer bar, as well as a few spirit stands for the more adventurous.
