MEET THE EDITOR OF VIRGINIA WINE LOVER MAGAZINE - PATRICK EVANS-HYLTON

Patrick Evans-HyltonLover of fine wine and good food, chef, writer, radio and television personality.  That's Patrick Evans-Hylton, the Managing Editor of Virginia Wine Lover Magazine, Virginia's newest and largest circulation lifestyle magazine set to launch this May.

Following a career in banking and finance, Patrick trained at Johnson & Wales in Norfolk.  "Good food and good wine were always part of my life.  Training as a chef helped refine my tastes and my repertoire."  While working at a Hampton Roads country club and operating his own catering business, "An Entertaining Idea," Patrick also began to pursue his interest in writing.

"I would freelance just about anything related to food.  I wrote restaurant reviews and some historical food pieces."   Those included a recipe column for a community newspaper and a number of  books, including the history of Suffolk peanuts, Smithfield ham and Virginia wine.  "I am so happy to share food and wine news and history.  There are many wonderful stories to tell, all without leaving the state of Virginia."

In 2002, Patrick began writing for Hampton Roads Magazine, a city/lifestyle publication in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area.  In six months, he advanced to Food Editor and then to Senior Editor for Wine and Food.    He can also be seen on WVEC TV-13 in Norfolk on a weekly cooking segment called "Everyday Gourmet" and is a frequent co-host on WNIS 850 AM's "The Good Life" talk show.

On his recent appointment as Managing Editor of Virginia Wine Lover Magazine, Patrick said, "People should be prepared for a wonderful publication when Virginia Wine Lover comes out in a few short months.  We are committed to showcasing Virginia wine, food and the good life that accompanies each."
VIRGINIA WINE LOVER TO PARTICIPATE IN VIRGINIA WINE EXPO
By Alex Papajohn, Executive Director
Presented by SunTrust

Virginia Wine Expo 4x6Consumers will have an opportunity to taste and purchase wines from more than 30 Virginia wineries at the 1st Annual Virginia Wine Expo on February 16-17 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.  Virginia Wine Lover is one of the media sponsors for the event.

According to the Wine Expo organizer, Alex Papajohn, "Just like people from Georgia should know their peaches, Virginians should know their wines.  We have a wide variety of wines that are a great source of pride because they can hold their own against wines from other states and countries."

The upscale event will feature a special exhibit designed to educate, enlighten and entertain attendees about Virginia wines.  Many of Virginia's finest food purveyors and dining establishments will offer food samples and chef demonstrations.  There will also be opportunities for the Virginia wine trade to network and share ideas and experiences.

SunTrust is the Signature Sponsor of the Wine Expo.  Fortessa is the Official Crystal Glass, providing attendees with a commemorative Schott Zwiesel crystal wine glass.  The Virginia Lottery is sponsor of the chef's demonstration stage and the Virginia wine exhibit.  Other sponsors include Farm Credit of Virginia, Cartier, Fink's Jewelers and HADCO.

SHARE A GLASS OF ROSÉ WITH YOUR VALENTINE
By Sharon Bradshaw, Writer and Owner of LaProvencale Cellars, Woodstock, VA

Couple on Valentines Day

With Valentine's Day in the immediate future, a good dry rosé is beautiful, delicious and romantic next to a couple of red roses in a bud vase on the dinner table. Who knows the magic that could bloom!

In Virginia, probably 90% of the Commonwealth's farm wineries produce a wine labeled with blush or rosé or some other proprietary term. The red varietals range from the traditional Pinot Noir to Sangiovese and Norton. We have selected here to mention a very few from the many pink wines that can be found across Virginia: Barboursville produces lovely Vintage Rosé, a blend of Nebbiolo, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese that had brief skin contact time to produce a hint of pineapples and mangos.  Delfosse's 2006 Rosé is dry with a hint of fresh strawberries on the nose and a delightful finish.  Kluge Estate's 2006 Albemarle Rosé is dry with a refreshing finish and is one of the best-balanced and flavorful summer picnic wines we've tasted in a long time.

Rosé WineWhen someone suggests having a rosé wine, what is your first thought?  Europeans would think of Anjou Rosé from the Loire Valley, Bandol from Provence, or Tavel from the southern Rhone Valley - delightfully dry pink wines to enjoy young in an informal atmosphere. North Americans, on the other hand, would probably visualize a pale pink or tangerine hued sweet wine.  Unfortunately, mass marketing of mediocre sweet pink wines has formed our opinion of all such wines in the sense of insipid, cheap, intoxicating fortified bottles of the legendary sweet swill favored by alcoholics and college freshmen - all an embarrassment to the world of fine wine and food.

Traditionally, European rosé wines - pinkish in color - are dry, young and refreshingly delightful. They are meant to be enjoyed young, within a couple of years of harvest. Never plan to age a rosé; it is just not created for aging, but for enjoying young fresh and bursting with spring fruit characteristics, especially strawberries.

All authorities agree that rose wines are not considered "serious" wines and would never be served at a formal dinner; however, one of the most highly acclaimed - and priced accordingly - wines in the world is Dom Pérignon Rosé. It was first produced in 1959 exclusively for the Shah of Iran's entertaining. The first commercial vintage from 1962, released in 1970 was highly regarded.

Abermarle and Delfosse Rosé WinesBaby Boomers will remember the popularity of Mateus in the squatty Bocksbeutel and Lancers in the painted bottle, along with the emergence of blush wines from California. The term blush for pink wines came about in 1978 when a brainstorming session in California resulted in the trademarking of the term. Wineries who chose to use it on their labels were expected to pay royalties. The holder of the trademark did not become wealthy as a result, but the name caught on quickly as a marketing name for semi-sweet wines from a couple of large California wineries, then spread across the continent. The term is generally restricted to North America and some areas in Australia.

In Europe, the grape varietals used for rosé wines are determined by the approved varietals for the growing area.  In the United States, it is a winemaker's decision. The red grape varietals are selected from those that are readily available.

This is a category of wine where we strongly suggest primary research. Seeing blush or rosé on the label gives no hint of what you might experience from the glass. Reading the winery's description can be a beginning, but you definitely need to try it for yourself.

BOW WOW! BARREL OAK WINERY!
NORTHERN VIRGINIA'S NEWEST FAMILY WINERY

BOW landscape for web

Brian & Sharon Roeder for web
Barrel Oak owners and winemakers, Brian and Sharon Roeder, along with their ever-loving golden retrievers Bogart and Barley, are producing quality Virginia reds and whites in a comfortable and unpretentious environment.  The winery is dog, as well as people-friendly, and the owners like to call it BOW as in Bow-Wow!

Located less than an hour from DC on Interstate 66 near Marshall, Barrel Oak is situated in an idyllic setting just below the Blue Ridge across from Little Cobbler Mountain.  Nearby wineries include Three Fox, Pearmund Cellars, Chateau O'Brien, Miracle Valley and Vintage Ridge.

The winery is totally hand-built with underground production facilities where guests can tour the barrel room, crush pad and steel tank room.  State of the art facilities include a geothermal heating and cooling system, low energy lighting and engineered insulating panels throughout.  The entire building has been "built green," and massive hand-hewn timbers, extensive stonework, enormous cedar doors and a huge stone fireplace attest to the care given to every detail.  The tasting room will open in May.

Barrel Oak is producing estate-grown grape varieties, including Traminette, Seyval Blanc, Merlot, Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc, Petit Verdot and Petit Manseng.  They also get grapes from surrounding vineyards to produce their label Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Francs.
