Vol. IV, Issue No. 8
August 2009
|
| Dear Friend of
Virginia Wine:
The dog days of summer are upon us, and what better
time to kick back and relax with a glass of Virginia
wine. I can recommend a great place to do just
that...Wintergreen Winery in Nellysford. Take a
picnic to enjoy with a bottle of their Viognier as you
kick back on the banks of the babbling brook that runs
through their property.
Wintergreen is just one of the many wineries in
picturesque settings along Virginia's highways and
byways that are waiting to welcome visitors this
month. You'll find some of them listed in our
Festivals and Events section, and you can download a
complete guide to Virginia wineries at www.virginiawines.org.
August is a great month to celebrate the good life
in Virginia, so get out and enjoy your
travels....sampling some fine wines along the
way.
Cheers!

DOUKENIE WINERY
By Chris
Wolf
|
|
|

Doukenie Winery is nestled at the base of Short
Hill Mountain in scenic Loudoun County. The natural
beauty of the property creates an ideal setting for a
day of relaxation. Enter the tasting room in a converted
barn and sample a wide variety of award-winning new
releases, including 2008 vintages of Riesling,
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the signature blend
Mandolin, as well as 2007 vintages of Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah.
This fall, Doukenie will release its much-anticipated
2007 Petit Verdot in 100% form, not a blend. This
varietal produces a wine that is deep purple in color
and possesses a vibrant tannic structure.
 Sebastien Marquet, Doukenie's Winemaker and
General Manager (pictured on the left), has over two
decades of international winemaking experience,
including France, California and Martinique. Joining
Doukenie's team in 2007, Sebastien brought his unique
approach to vineyard management as well as his
enthusiastic vision for winemaking.
When you become a member of Doukenie Winery's
Heritage Club, you receive additional savings on wine
purchases. There is no fee for membership and other
benefits include special invitations to members-only
wine release parties and exclusive seasonal
events.
On August 15th, Doukenie will celebrate classic
cars and new vintages with its "Cruise-In" event from
noon to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.DoukenieWinery.com.

BARREN RIDGE VINEYARDS...LIFE AND WINE ARE GOOD IN
THE CENTRAL SHENANDOAH VALLEY
By John
Higgs
|
|
|
Located on a high ridge with a panoramic view of
central Shenandoah Valley sits Barren Ridge
Vineyards. The landscape and terrior here make
stunning vistas and superb wines.
The winery is the first (and at present the
only) one in Augusta County. It opened in April 2008 and
has established itself as a place where wine, life and
beauty intersect to produce an environment in harmony
with the peaceful bucolic countryside.
For the past 5 years John and Shelby Higgs have
been clearing the land, planting and renovating the
historic packing shed. The property has been in
the Higgs family since 1934. Once a
spectacular orchard, it had been left untouched for 20
years. John, under the tutelage of viticulturalist
Chris Hill and enologist Michael Shaps, has planted
6 acres of vines and made wine in 2007 and 2008 with
grapes from local vineyards. Their first harvest
will be this fall.
In their first year of winemaking John and Shelby
received a number of awards including a gold medal for
their Viognier. Bartholomew Broadbent recognized their
'07 Touriga as one of the best in the world in the
special tasting at the '09 Virginia Expo (see Virginia
Wine Lover e-newsletter of April '08).
Barren Ridge Vineyards is located off of Rte
64, between Staunton and Waynesboro, just over the
mountain from Charlottesville. They host business
meetings, weddings and social events of all
kinds.

Driving through Rappahannock County
feels something quite like time travel . . . back to the
days when life was simpler, slower paced and more
rural. Vineyards and farms dot the rolling
landscape nestled among the beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains. Wine afficionados refer to this
undeveloped area of Virginia as the East Coast Napa

wineries, upscale restaurants and Bed &Breakfasts,
all less than 2-hour drives from Northern Virginia,
Charlottesville and Richmond.

its 2x5 street grid platted by 17-year-old surveyor
George Washington is the largest of Rappahannock's
quaint villages. Superbly located in the heart of the
town's historic district and within walking distance of
a 5-star restaurant, charming gift shops and galleries,

| 18TH ANNUAL STATE FAIR WINE COMPETITION BRINGS
RECORD ENTRIES
By Windy
Campbell
|
|
|
A panel of 20 distinguished wine sommeliers,
producers, retailers, writers, restaurateurs and
collectors spent much of Monday, June 8 swirling,
sniffing and sipping 239 Virginia wines - from 48
Virginia wineries - entered in the 2009 State Fair of
Virginia Wine Competition. The competition featured a
blind tasting of wines, where the judges awarded Gold
ribbons to 28 wines and Silver ribbons to 27
wines.
Held at the Montpelier Center for Arts &
Education in Montpelier, the competition featured
Virginia wine varietals of Chardonnay, Viognier,
Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit
Verdot. In addition, the entries included a new varietal
- Traminette - which was among the Gold ribbon winners.
A hybrid of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer,
Traminette is a fragrant and well-made wine with a good
blend of aroma, acidity and complexity.
"We had the most wines entered this year than ever
before, and it is nice to see the industry grow and
really go forward even from just five years ago," said
George Davis, a senior judge who has been judging the
competition since its inception. "National industry
trends reflect lighter, less tannic wines and less use
of oak. We saw more un-oaked wines this year and the
submissions of un-oaked Chardonnay is a perfect example.
Among the reds, the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot
wines had less oak exposure as well. They all were
well-made wines.
