Vol. VIII, Issue No. 1

Dear Virginia Wine Lover,

Happy New Year and all good wishes for a peaceful and prosperous 2013!  We look forward to continuing to bring you news about Virginia wines...the people who make them and the ever-growing number of people who consume them.

Our first featured Winery of the Month this year is DelFosse Vineyards and Winery.  One of Virginia's premier wineries, DelFosse has a picture perfect location where they produce their award winning wines that are praised far and wide.  Genevieve DelFosse's recipe for Boeuf Bourguignon is certain to warm you up on a cold winter day.

Enjoy a tour of DelFosse Vineyards and Winery.  Just sign up below, and you may be a winner.

Be sure to check out January Events for "chili happenings" at the wineries, including the four Heart of Virginia Wine Trail members.

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions, so keep those "cards and letters coming".  Cheers!

DelFosse Vineyards and Winery

Faber, Virginia

The beauty of the Blue Ridge, the charm of the DelFosse family and the superiority of the wines they produce are reflected in this outstanding Virginia winery.  We are proud to have DelFosse Vineyards and Winery as the Official Virginia Wine Lover Winery of the Month...January 2013.

Nestled in a quiet valley at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, DelFosse Vineyards and Winery invites you to come explore. A brief thirty-minute drive from Charlottesville and Jefferson's Monticello will lead you to this scenic location where you can experience the solitude of the Virginia countryside.  The rural setting is unique, hugged between the hills, but with elevation that ensures both rich wines and spectacular views.  The heavily terraced vineyards are planted from 850' to 1200' along the Eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Claude DelFosse is the founder, president and owner of DelFosse Vineyards and Winery.  What started as a retirement project has quickly become an all absorbing second career, following a first career as an executive in the aerospace software business in Northern Virginia and California.  Claude is a native of France where he received early exposure to wine drinking (but not wine making). He came to the United States in the 1960's under a Fulbright fellowship and has been married to Genevieve Desdevises, a native of Nice, France, for over 40 years.  They have three children, each of whom has a wine named for them.

Always fun at the tasting room with a view.

Established in 2002 in the Monticello AVA wine region, DelFosse Vineyards and Winery covers 330 acres.  There are 20 acres under vine, tended using sustainable practices.  They include Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec,  Petit Verdot and Chambourcin . The winery specializes in estate bottled premium high end varietal wines that express the Virginia terroir.  They produce 100 percent varietal labels as well as high end Bordeaux style blends.  DelFosse Meritage recently won a Gold medal in the prestigious Virginia Governor's Cup.

Where would I want to be in Central Virginia on Bastille Day?  Only at the beautiful DelFosse Vineyards. My husband and I arrived to meet Claude and taste some of his fabulous wines.  We actually tasted 17 wines, from crisp whites to hearty reds and on to dessert wines!  I adore the Viognier.  And, Delfosse Meritage is truly one of the best red wines I have ever tasted.  What a great Bastille Day trip!  Voila!"

DelFosse Vineyards and Winery offers a variety of activities for the visitor's enjoyment.  Delight in a quiet picnic by the lake or take a hike or bike the five and a half miles of trails.  Tour the vineyards then relax with a glass of wine in the inviting tasting room.  Special wine dinners, food and wine pairings and the very popular French Crepe days draw visitors to DelFosse year round.  It is a popular setting for private events and weddings.

Also on the property are a functional spring for the bottling of spring water and historically preserved buildings.  Treat yourself to an overnight or weekend at the 100+ year old Historic Chestnut Log Cabin, a peaceful respite overlooking the lake.  The Cabin, initially used as the winery tasting room, was completely restored in 2005 with all the modern amenities.

DelFosse Vineyards and Winery is a wine lover's favorite.  Whatever your pleasure, the bucolic setting and award-winning wines promise a memorable experience!  We invite you to visit.

A Recipe from DelFosse Vineyards & Winery

Chef Genevieve DelFosse
The name comes from the French Province of "BOURGOGNE" because good red wine from this region is used in its preparation. It is a great dish to prepare for a large crowd since it can be totally cooked ahead of time.

Actually, the flavors improve when served after one day's rest in the fridge.  Traditional accompaniments to Boeuf Bourguignon are small boiled peeled yellow Yukon potatoes with a sprinkle of parsley.  Variations:  Egg noodles, polenta, even rice.

Boeuf Bourguignon is best cooked in an enameled cast iron pot, Le Creuset type.
