THE MELTING POT, ANOTHER VINO! VIRGINIA RESTAURANT
By Kris Peters, Marketing & Special Events Manager, The Melting Pot, Richmond

Since the day The Melting Pot in Richmond, an all fondue restaurant, opened its doors 15 years ago we have been proud to offer service and a dining experience not available elsewhere.  Local owner, Chad Hornik, has made wine a large part of The Melting Pot culture with an eye on Virginia Wines.  All serve staff have weekly wine tastings, classes and sometimes quizzes and must pass a detailed wine course as part of their initial training.  Periodically, arrangements are made for staff to visit local Virginia wineries or have wine makers visit us.  Our award winning wine list offers Virginia Wines by the glass as well as bottles and we offer affordable Virginia Wine Dinners during the year.  The Melting Pot in Richmond was rewarded for its support of Virginia Wineries a few years ago by receiving The Virginia Wine Restaurant of the Year award.

Diners can enjoy a light cheese fondue and chocolate fondue at the Wine Bar or a full four-course fondue dinner in the dining rooms.  Private and romantic booths for two are always in demand and the Virginia Room offers seating for up to 44 with multi-media equipment, an 83" screen and two 42" plasmas for family gatherings or business presentations.

Virginia has seven Melting Pot locations, all proud to offer Virginia wines.

The Melting Pot is a member of Vino! Virginia, a Virginia Wine Lover sponsored program to promote Virginia wines.  These Virginia restaurants sell Virginia wines by the glass and promote the selections through their menu and/or blackboard specials.

OLD WORLD ELEGANCE.  SWEELY ESTATE WINERY
By Marcie Siegel, General Manager

The perfect union of old world ambiance and a state-of-the-art wine production facility can be found at Sweely Estate Winery, 1.5 miles west of Route 29 on Rt. 230 in Madison, VA.

Sweely Estate Winery's Hospitality Center sits at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounded by 40 acres of vineyards.  Known as one of Virginia's best tended vineyards, it produces top quality grapes for their award winning wines.  "As a matter of fact, we have won regional and national awards on our first vintage - 2006, including a gold for '1867 Meritage' from the Dallas Morning News" says owner Jess Sweely.  "The vineyard is where everything begins." says Frantz Ventre, winemaker.  No detail is too small if quality is to be enhanced.  Three years ago, we eliminated herbicides from our vineyards and we're always looking for ways to be better stewards of the land."

The Hospitality Center, with its exposed wood beams, hand crafted wine bar and wine library, includes an expansive room for wedding receptions, corporate meeting rooms, art gallery featuring local artists and gift shop stocked with unique items for entertaining.  The tasting bar is nestled behind a large open fireplace and provides mountain views as guests enjoy tasting Sweely Estate's nine wine varietals made in the classic French style.

Sweely Estate is open daily, 11-5 pm.  Call or visit the website for directions and events.

BED & BREAKFAST OF THE MONTH
INN AT WESTWOOD FARM...THE PERFECT RESPITE FROM URBAN STRESS
By Dan Ingraham

Elizabeth Goeke and Jay Billie knew they found a special place when they moved to Orange in 2004.  Now they share it with traveling wine lovers year round at the Inn at Westwood Farm.  One of their recent guests wrote it best, "There are times, and places, that stand out like islands in time. This inn is one."

The house beautifully blends the best of old architecture with an elegant, modern sensibility. From the contemporary decor to the muted warm colors that echo those of nearby Montpelier, to the truly gourmet food prepared from local sources and augmented by their own garden, it all works together to create an exceptional experience of simplicity and luxury. This unique Virginia bed and breakfast features four guest rooms with amenities such as whirlpool tubs, seasonal flowers, exquisite linens, antique oriental rugs, early morning coffee when you poke your head above the covers, local Virginia wine and appetizers in the afternoon, and a breakfast that is a visual delight as well as delicious. The inn offers a perfect respite from urban stress.

The Inn offers the Montpelier Wine Weekend Excursion, which includes touring six Piedmont wineries within a short drive from James Madison's home. Begin your Montpelier Wine Weekend with a tasting and a dinner at the award-winning Palladio Restaurant at Barboursville Vineyards. On Saturday, after touring the restored home of James Madison and 4 local wineries, you'll dine at the acclaimed Inn at Meander Plantation. Spend the next day in a leisurely drive through rolling hills and back roads to sample 2 more vineyards.
